Another Record year for Sporting Clay Shoot Revenues                                                  Omar Rachid

The Victoria Rotary Club and the Boys and Girls Club of Victoria hosted the eighth Annual Charity Sporting Clay Shoot on April 16-17, 2005. This year’s event was simply awesome. We had splendid weather, great turn out and most importantly a record breaking $37,027 was raised for this worthy cause.

I extend my sincere appreciation to those who helped on the committee and also to our sponsors, donors and shooters for making this event possible and such a great success.

This Sporting Clay Shoot is one of several fundraisers necessary to meet The Boys and Girls Club financial goals. Your contribution allows this event to continue to make a substantial impact on community youth programs.

One half of the proceeds goes to the Boys and Girls Club. It helps fund programs such as the Homework Club, arts and crafts, boxing and special events. With the Homework Club program the Boys and Girls Club hires qualified teachers and assistants to help club members perform better academically. Special events of the Club include celebration of family days and a Christmas event.
The Victoria Rotary Club uses its portion to benefit students and other non-profit groups. A few of these are: College Scholarships, Youth Leadership Training Seminars, YMCA, Mid Coast Family Council , Hope of South Texas , Boy Scouts, Children's Museum, and Victoria County 4-H

Again, on behalf of the entire membership of the Victoria Rotary Club, I thank you for your contribution and support and hope that you’ll continue to support this event in coming years.

Sixty-five sponsors have contributed to this great success. Go to our web site, http://victoriarotary.org/shoot.htm, to view their names. ▲

Joe writes. . . .

I thank everyone for a memorable year and for your efforts. We can look with pride on our accomplishments this year. The fun and fellowship we shared with other clubs on the Centennial Project have me looking forward to the Rotary’s next century. When we are united in Rotary we can do almost anything. Shortly, we can take pride in the defeat of the great crippler, polio. Unfortunately, other diseases are in the wings waiting to strike. Locally, TB is on the rise and AIDS is a constant threat. We can look back and count the children that we have immunized, but there are children being born every minute who also need their shots. Look for upcoming events to start our battle on these fronts during Mary's year. Please be as generous with your time and energy for Mary as you were with me and, together we will be able to accomplish anything. Thank you all. ▲

It’s that time again!                                                                                               Terry Robinson

Every year the three Rotary clubs join to offer free immunizations for children returning to school. This year we again have partnered with the Victoria Zoo to offer free admission to all those families who have kids needing immunization. Even if they don’t need shots we assure that their records are up to date and are ready.

Last year we immunized 130 children making them ready for the school year. We watched several nurses, giving three or more shoots to a child, trying to comfort them…what a talent they have…I only had to wear ear plugs one time!

We usually break the day up into 3 time zones and have each club provide volunteers for the different stations. The Zoo has arranged activities that will educate and entertain all who attend.

Sign up sheets will be handed out in July. I look forward to working with all of you again on August 13, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, for another ROTARY COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT! ▲

What is Ten Against TB?                                                                                     John Lenihan

Ten Against Tuberculosis (TATB) is a bi-national initiative created by the health officers of the ten U.S.-Mexico border states in 1995. The goal of TATB “is to […] identify and address the opportunities and challenges that cannot effectively be addressed unilaterally by either country acting alone.” TATB facilitates bi-national cooperative efforts to reduce tuberculosis morbidity, mortality, and transmission.

A sense of urgency about an elevated rate of tuberculosis along the Mexico-U.S. border led to this initiative. TATB supports the following broad activities:

The Victoria County Health Department will present a program on TB Awareness to the Club August 2nd. There are active TB cases in Victoria County.

District 5930 Heath Services committee has included as one of it’s three goals: to “work with the US-Mexico Border Health Commission to help build a partnership for Tuberculosis prevention and control.” ▲

Nine new Paul Harris Fellows announced

The club announced donations to the Rotary Foundation for nine new Paul Harris Fellows. They are Denny Arnold, Wondra Chang, Jim Hoffman, Pat Kelly, John Lenihan, Ronnie Morris, Ron Peace, John Roberts, and Fred Sanchez. ▲

Board appoints two new directors

Sally Covacevich and Lorene Bothe were appointed to fill the directors’ positions vacated by Earl Smith and Pat Rhodes. The Board appreciated having a list of eight volunteers from which to choose. ▲

Bright ideas needed for programs

Peggy Cunningham has programs identified through August 23. She is looking for programs for the remainder of the year. We will have a member a month tell us about herself or himself and will alternate among new and old members so we may all get to know each other better. Known programs are listed on our home page and there is a link to suggest a program. ▲

Meeting helpers needed

Peggy wants someone to hand out badges in addition to those who sell raffle tickets, offer the invocation, introduce the student, and tell a joke. She, also, suggests sitting with newer members to make them feel welcome and a part of the club. ▲
